SCOTLAND: Golf Sport cradle
It was here on the windswept St. Andrews in Scotland that golf arose about 600 years ago.
It was also here that it was decided that a golf round will consist of 18 holes, not 22 as it originally was. It happened "only" 250 years ago. And that is where all the rules of golf originated.
For a passionate golfer is one round at St. Andrews Old Course almost like a pilgrimage. St. Andrews, has several courts that purely objective can be argued to be as great as The Old Course, but no golf courses in the world has the same sound as it.
You have four options if you want to play the Old Course: You can sign up for a lottery that gives the start time up to a year in advance, you can take the chance of being drawn into the daily lottery, you can set yourself up as a single player and hope to be invited in or you can buy a safe place. The latter is expensive. Two nights in a hotel and a round on The Old Course, plus one on the other tracks, costs between 14 000 and 24 000 respectively.
To get to St. Andrews, you can either fly to Aberdeen (and drive 84 miles north), Glasgow (90 miles west) or Edinburgh (48 miles south).
Prices at St Andrews Old Course:
High season: 130 pounds (19 April - 17 October)
Middle season: 91 pounds (19 October to 31 October)
Low: 64 pounds
