Richard Godwin is a crime and horror writer as well as a produced playwright
. He was born in London and obtained a BA and MA in English and American Literature from King's College London. He has travelled extensively and lectured, and worked in property. His works in print include 'Chemical', published in the Anthology Back in 5 Minutes, 'Doll', published in Howl: Tales of the Feral And Infernal (Lame Goat Press 2010), 'Face off' in CrimeFactory Issue No. 5 (CreateSpace 2010), 'Pike N Flytrap' in Needle Magazine (Lulu 2010) and 'Mother' in Tainted Tea (Lulu 2011). Richard Godwin writes dark crime fiction, and he lets it slip the net like wash into horror. He also writes plays and black satires .He says of his debut novel "I wrote Apostle Rising," stated Godwin, "for every reader of crime and horror fiction out there. I wrote it for anyone who likes a guessing game. I wrote it for anyone who is interested in why crimes occur, and for anyone who likes a good novel, strong characters, a dramatic story and is interested in psychology." A novel that is a must for fans of Val McDermid's Tony Hill and Ian Rankin's Rebus
On the surface, Apostle Rising is a police procedural. A serial killer novel. And a damned good one it is, too.
It's the story of a haunted policeman- and the killer he never caught. Detective Frank Castle is still living in the pitch black shadow of The Woodlands Killer - the one that got away. But then a copycat killer crawls through the cracks in the pavement and Castle and his partner are dragged down a tunnel to gaze into the abyss. The man Castle believes was responsible for the first killings is running a sinister cult and playing mind games with the police. And the ritualistic killer keeps raising the stakes and slipping through their hands. The body count is rising. Castle employs a brilliant psychologist to help him solve the case, and he begins to dig into the killer's psyche. But some psychopaths are cleverer than others.
Just like in his short stories, Godwin has you staring at things you'd rather look away from at times as though he's holding your head in one direction with one hand and your eye-lids up with the other. It gets messy out there - brutally so. It also becomes psychologically disturbing as we see Karl Black work his way into the minds of Castle and Stone. There's nowhere to run once your inside and there's not going to be a way out until you get to the end, Godwin's new twist on the term page-turner.
But Apostle Rising is more than that. It's also wonderful, rich prose and a breathtaking plot with more than a few savage twists of noir.
