Different people, different times, but the admiration remains the same.
This small peninsula, which can be travelled across within one day, is unique. Almost all climatic zones of the planet surprisingly unite here, as well as plants of the north and the south, and landscapes in which you can see the grandeur of the Cordilleras, the severe beauty of the Appalachians, the idyllic serenity of Alpine meadows, and sometimes the chaotic unreality of extraterrestrial landscapes. People are skiing on the Angarsky Pass while at the same time roses are blooming, only 32 miles to the south, in Yalta. The sweet scent of magnolias reigns in Miskhor while in the mountains violets have only just blossomed out. Many countries have no sea at all, while the Crimea has two: the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.
The Crimea is rich in places of interest, monuments of nature, history and culture, many of them being of world significance. Not without reason it is called "an open-air museum".
The Marble Cave on mountain Chatyrdag takes an exceptional place among the natural phenomena. Found in 1987 it quickly became the most frequently visited cave in Europe. The cave has a series of passages in three levels and a number of underground halls with unique gigantic stalactites and stalagmites and interesting paleontological finds such as bones of the mammoth, woolly rhinoceros, bison, and cave lion. One of its biggest underground halls is big enough to accommodate the annual local rock festival (50sq.miles with 88 feet height).
The Crimea has ancient ties with Mediterranean civilisation. Many of cities of the peninsula are gems of this civilisation. Each of them has its own appearances: Feodosia and Yalta, Yevpatoria and Alushta, Novy Svet and Gursuf, Alupka and Simeiz. Kerch (once the capital of the mighty Bosporan Kingdom) has preserved the underground crypt of Demeter, where the Goddess of Fertility and Agriculture is represented on a monumental fresco. The east and west coasts of the Crimea are enhanced with grand ruins of medieval Italian towns, the fortresses of Sudak and Balaklava. Ruins of ancient Greek Chersoneses with remains of temples, dwelling houses, a spacious theatre and strong defensive walls have been preserved in Sevastopol. The scene of Euripides's poem Iphigenia among the Tauri is set on Cape Fiolent. The contemporary beacon at Cape Ai-Todor reminds of the fact that in ancient times it was a place where the Kharaks Fortress stood, an outpost of the Roman Empire in Tauris. The Crimea has a number of Christian Orthodox cathedrals and monasteries (among them the Dormition, the Inkerman, St.George's, and Sts.Cosmas and Damian's monasteries) and Muslim Mosques. The cave towns of Mangup, Chufut-Kale, Eski-Kermen and Kalamita are original monuments of the Middle Ages. Their mysterious histories have been stirring imagination of scholars for two hundred years. Bakhchisaray Palace of the Crimean Khans, Ruins of Ancient City of Chersoneses, Complex of the Sudak Fortress are registered as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Ukraine.
It seems that a white snowstorm whirls over the Swan Islands, the famous bird sanctuary. Ducks, seagulls, teals and cormorants are flying there in flocks, herons soar grandly, and sometimes pelicans live there for weeks. The air is filled with the flapping of wings. Ornithologists of the Swan Islands ring several thousands of swans annualy. Such gathering of "the king of birds" can be found nowhere else in the world.
The Crimea is like an amazing book from which you can learn many interesting things. Thus, Livadia, a charming royal estate on the Southern Coast, was not only a favourite place for the three of the Russian royal families but excited a feeling of a particular tender attachment in them. The eldest daughter of Nicolas II explained the fondness of their family for Livadia in one of heir letters: "Life was in the Crimea, while in St.Petersburg it was an official duty".
At the concluding stage of the World War II the world talked about the former royal residence again: in February 1945 the famous Yalta Conference of the Big Three leaders of the anti-Hitler coalition - British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin - was held in the Livadia Palace. The meetings of the Great Three had a funny episode: the president of the USA liked Livadia enough to announce his desire to buy the palace after the war to Stalin. Nowadays the Livadia Palace is a venue for intergovernmental meetings and diplomatic receptions of foreign statesmen arriving to Ukraine.
The Crimea is a land of unique beauty. "Enchanting land! Delight of eyes!" - young Pushkin admired the Crimea. Maxim Rylsky wrote: "The very air of the Crimea, its mountains, its coastal rocks, its groves, and its vineyards breathe poetry, evoke legends, tales, and songs". Herodotus called the air of its mountain forests full of aroma "balmy". All that is the Crimea.
The Crimea possesses a unique asset it always has something new even for those who know it well. For more than 150 years since this unique peninsula acquired a reputation of a first-class resort, it has been attracting millions of holidaymakers.
