The Crowded Bpo Sector
Competition is expected in an industry when the returns on investment are increasingly favorable
. The same can be said about the call center industry. The rich winnings of BPO firms and the sector in general have encouraged several investors to pump money into this business. There are a growing number of call centers in the developing countries. The admirable way in which this sector tackled the recession and came out virtually unscathed has won over many followers among investors and entrepreneurs. As a result of this, the business process outsourcing industry has more players and therefore, more competition. This has its pros and cons. Let's examine them in some detail.
The biggest advantage of having competition in the call center sector is that the price of call center services goes down. There is a sense of rivalry among the call centers to grab those A-listed projects. Since business firms have been badly hit by the recession, the cost of hiring a BPO unit will definitely be a prime reason why they will select one and reject another. The business process outsourcing firms have to go to long lengths to bring their prices down. The cost of getting infrastructure and other resources is not going down in any way. In fact they are swelling with time. However, they hardly have a choice in this matter. If they are not cutting down the cost of BPO service, they stand to lose the projects. They cannot afford to do that. So this acts as a disadvantage for them.
Competition improves the quality of call center services. The frantic rush for telemarketing projects also takes into account the fact that the call centers bagging the projects will have to pull up their socks really well. They cannot afford to fall short of expectations. On the flip side, failure to deliver the goods will taint the reputation of a BPO unit in a competitive market. Once a call center is trips on the deadline or there is some error in the lead generation or other aspect, the news will spread like wildfire. Before you know, everyone will know about it. Business firms will be reluctant to hire such a BPO service unit. This will benefit the other business process outsourcing units in a big way. They will have a greater access to the steadily drying number of
answering service projects.
Probably the biggest advantage that the call center sector draws from the competitive environment is the will to improve their technological back-up. Call centers realize that technology will be the factor that creates a difference between the winner and the also-rans. Clients and business firms looking to hire BPO units are also paying more attention than ever in what kinds of technology is being used to do their telemarketing services and other call center services. They still attach considerable importance to the experience that a BPO service unit has, but it's slowly being beaten by the rise of preference of technology. The fact that one firm gets a project and another doesn't is probably decided because of this one reason.
