The Current Shortage Of Classroom Supplies
The subject of classroom supplies has gone through a number of phases over the years
. In the 1930's the parents were to supply all paper, pencils, crayons and other schoolroom materials for their children. Students in high school, in some areas, were even expected to purchase the required textbooks. For those on the low income scale there were usually very well worn books available. As the years progressed and the schools became more proficient, these materials were available, in the class, for all students although some parents still bought a few special things their child wanted such as notebooks with special cartoons.
In today's teaching world many teachers are having difficulty securing a sufficient number of needed materials and the situation is almost as bad as it was in the 30's. As a result, parents have been supplied with a list of things to purchase at the beginning of school and the list is getting longer each year. Many teachers are purchasing these necessities out of their own pockets as the school has, of necessity, cut their budget.
There are a number of causes of today's classroom supply problem. The main one is the economic times which have found many schools operating on a bare bones budget. Sports activities, music, art, singing and many other subjects have been eliminated altogether. When class materials costs have come up for consideration they have also been cut or eliminated.
Many of today's unemployed parents, who have a number of children, face a hardship when told they must supply all the supplies needed for the class their child is attending. While there are some organizations that help, in this regard, unfortunately there are not enough to go around. This makes the child dependent on the generosity of the teacher to provide the class necessities.
A class cannot operate efficiently without proper materials for the students to use. A teacher cannot properly teach without supplies such as flash cards, test tubes, chalk and other things needed, depending on the class subject or subjects. Without proper tools, nothing can be presented in a manner that will be retained by a student and these tools are classroom supplies.
