The Customer Is Always Right Fallacy!
I hope the title of this article has shocked you
. If it has, then that means I've likely got your attention, and that's what I wanted to do. If you believe "the customer is always right," then I can tell you that you've been fooled. I don't want you to be among that group of individuals that will go to any length to keep their customers happy.
You're likely thinking that I must be out of my mind to make such a statement. Well, I'm not out of my mind, I'm quite healthy in mind. The fact is, believing "The Customer Is Always Right" statement has been the reason that millions of people in the customer service industry suffer so much unhappiness and grief.
Just like people in general, some customers are just great to deal with, right? You likely have clients who are extremely friendly, easy to get along with, and who treat you with the respect that you deserve. When you come across such a customer, of course you'll go out of your way to provide them with the very best level of service possible.
Nevertheless, you likely have run across the type of customer that you can't wait to get away from, in fact you may actually wish to get rid of them. These types of customers never listen, as they don't have any communication skills. No matter how well you service them or how great the quality of your product is, these types of customers always want a "cheaper" price. They are constantly unhappy, insulting, threatening, and complaining to you. When your finished dealing with this type of customer you're left feeling extremely unhappy, exhausted, and frustrated, and you hope you won't have to deal with them again.
How do you think you should handle this type of customer?
1) Limit contact - you should never initiate contact with this type of customer. Allow them to contact you if they need to place an order or for any other reason. It's not necessary to regularly touch base with these types of individuals.
2) Never offer such a customer a discount. The time, energy, and frustration required on your part in dealing with the type of clients that I have described above is worthy of your full fee/list price. I'm not suggesting you overcharge - as in rip them off - but they don't deserve discounts. Save those for your very best clients.
3) These kinds of customers may threaten to use another vendor since they believe the other vendor "has a product/service as good or better than yours." Don't fall for this bluffing. If this were really the case, why would your customer still be dealing with you and trying to get you to lower your price/fee? If the customer really does go to another vendor, then you won't have to deal with them anymore, and that's a good thing.
Likely, you'll find that "the customer from hell" will be back after just a few days, because your product/service is really the best.
4) Under no circumstances should you waste any of your valuable resources on such a client. This includes money and your or your employee's time and/or energy. See #1 above.
To conclude, let me be clear that I am not against providing the best customer service possible. It also would not be wise, respectful, or dignified to refer to your "customer from hell' in those terms while in their prescence. Nevertheless, you should not allow such clients to rob you of the joy of doing a great job.
We should all be grateful that most customers are a pleasure to deal with.
