To start learning to drive the first thing is to get a provisional licence. In order to do this you will need to fill out a D1 application from which is available at most post offices. You will need to provide a passport type photo and payment of 50 and send away to the DVLA. Once you receive your provisional licence you can start to learn to drive with either an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) for someone who has held a full driving licence for a minimum of 3 years and is over the age of 21.

The next part you will need to get through is the theory test. The current theory test is in two parts with a short 5 minute break between each part. The first part is the multiple choice question section. Here the candidate is presented with a random set of 50 questions in which they will have to answer by selecting either 1,2 or more answers from the list provided with the question. Some questions will have a picture to look at and answer questions on. As you proceed through the questions you can always flag a question for review later on is you are unsure of the answer.

Stop at the scene of the accident

Once you have completed the questions you will have a short break in which you may be asked by the system if you would like to take part in a questionnaire to help improve the service of the theory test. It is not compulsory to accept this but can help future candidates with the test. After this you will start the hazard perception part of the test.

The hazard perception part consists of a series of 14 video clips in which a developing hazard is depicted. The candidate has to click on the mouse when they spot the developing hazard in the clip and will be marked according to how quickly they react to the developing hazard. Each hazard has a maximum mark value of 5 points reducing by a point until it reaches 0. One of the clips will have two developing hazards so the candidate will have to keep concentrating throughout the clips. For this section the pass mark is 44 out of 75. In order to pass the theory test the candidate must pass both sections at the same time of sitting them otherwise they will have to re-sir the test again.

The current theory test cost 31 so it is important to revise and learnt the subject thoroughly so you only have to take it once. There are a number of good online theory test packages and your instructor can advise on which may be the most suitable to use.
