The Daily Skin Routine: Step One - Cleanse

KNOW YOUR SKIN TYPE

Before deciding on your skin care routine and choosing products to incorporate into it, you need to find out your skin type. Broadly, there are five different skin types: normal, dry, oily, combination, and sensitive. These are not necessarily mutually exclusive as for instance, any type of skin can also be sensitive. However, each type requires a different skin care routine. For more information about your skin type, check out What is Your Skin Type?' section of our website.

An effective daily skin care routine should follow three simple steps: cleanse, tone, moisturise. Some people recommend twice daily application, morning and evening. Others think this is too much and adhering to the routine once a day is sufficient.

STEP ONE - CLEANSE

The first step is to cleanse the skin. Cleansing removes impurities, excess sebum and desquamating corneocytes (dead shedding skin cells). Always follow instructions on the container as well as common sense. But here are a few useful tips for choosing and using your cleanser:

Always use a gentle cleanser

Choose your cleanser based on your skin requirements. For instance, oily or problem skin can benefit from a purifying, balancing product. Dry skin requires a moisturising, nourishing cleanser that will add hydration. Revitalising, rejuvenating products are best suited for maturing skin, which also tends to be dry. Sensitive skin needs extra care and a gentle, soothing cleanser

Avoid using a washcloth as it is potentially unhygienic and can be rough on sensitive skin

Avoid using bar soaps as these dry the skin and disturb its natural pH balance

Rinse the face with tepid water. Never use hot or cold water as this can cause damage to capillaries and dehydrate the skin

You only need a pea size amount to cleanse the face. Appling too much product would be wasteful and make it difficult to remove

Use your fingertips to apply the product, gently massaging onto the face using circular upward and outward motions

Do not rub or use otherwise harsh movements

Leave the cleaner on for a few minutes to work

Rinse thoroughly with tepid water. You can also use a cotton wool pad to gently remove the product. Ensure all product is removed thoroughly before pat drying. Never rub the face dry

Make-up, especially waterproof cosmetics, should be removed with a purpose-made cleanser

Cold cream is an alternative to conventional cleansers as it requires no water. Apply the cream as you would a moisturiser, leave for a few minutes and wipe off with a cotton pad

Finally, if the face feels squeaky clean after cleansing, the product is probably too harsh
