The Danger of Thrill Betting on Horse Races - Don't Make This Mistake
If you are one of the millions of people who bet on horse races, you probably understand how much fun it is to see your horse win the race and to collect your winnings. While psychologists tell us their are many reasons that people enjoy horse racing, almost all people enjoy wagering for the same reason. It is thrilling to win, especially to win money. For those who don't work hard at handicapping horse races, it almost feels like they are getting away with something or like finding money in the street.
For the people who do work hard to figure out the races, it feels like a reward for hard work. In fact, many professional handicappers treat it like another day at work, expect to win, and feel justly compensated when they win. While feeling rewarded for a job well done can be intoxicating to some, the thrill of winning at the horse races when you've don it by chance or luck, is downright thrilling. Of course, most people who gamble on horse races wind up losing money in the long run, so the sense of getting something for nothing is not very accurate.
The momentary pleasure and thrill of it all stimulates certain parts of the brain and the release of chemicals that cause pleasure, and that is the real danger. Becoming a thrill junkie can get out of control. A harmless afternoon at the races and some recreational betting are probably healthful in the long run because they help you to relax and unwind, something all people need to do from time to time. If that thrill gets to be too intoxicating, however, you may lose sight of the fact that you are paying for the thrill.
You therefore have a choice to make when going to the race track or betting on horse races. You can treat it as a hobby, allow yourself a budget and consider the expense as an entertainment allowance, or you may take a more serious approach and try to make a profit from it. If you do get serious about making a long term profit from betting on horses, you will have to work hard to accomplish your goal. The more you do it, the more that thrill will become the satisfaction of earning that money.
For some people, it makes much more sense to keep the handicapping light and just to have fun and try to get lucky. There is certainly nothing wrong with that. For those who prefer hard work and the sense of accomplishment from turning a profit at a very difficult task, then perhaps the serious handicapping approach makes more sense. I advise you to be honest with yourself and always know why you are making a bet. What is the primary and secondary gain or reward?
