The Dash Between the Dates

know the length of that dash varies for everyone, but it isn't how long it is but what we do in it that matters. It is the time allotted to make preparation for eternity to come.

Many times when we hear a statement made about the dash between the dates, we think of those on a tombstone or memorial. This is where we normally see this combination of digits. It is usually engraved into stone, giving it a sense of finality, as unchangeable things are stated as being written in stone. There are many thoughts that can be had while thinking upon this dash, yet the points concerning it usually speak of the quality or quantity of life.

After considering this statement, it came to me how that dash doesn't always denote through but also represents the pace we live our lives. A dash can be the speed at which something moves, it is normally associated with short, fast sprints between two close points. People don't dash for long distances; this is considered a run or marathon and is how we complete our lives. The dash is more of our daily mode of operation and this is often how we live our lives as a series of dashes.

So often our days pass without any feeling of accomplishment and we think of them as being wasted. From the moment we wake until we lay back down to sleep we are constantly sprinting from one task to another. We rush from place to place and from one duty to the next until something stops us or we are out of time. We have so much we must accomplish we can only spend enough time on each project to barely complete it. Our "to do" lists are so full we become overwhelmed with them and often only make an effort to temporarily finish.

It is sad to realize how we live according to the clock and not by own values. In times past we took the time required to do our best and were proud of the accomplishment. Now, with the speed of society we don't have time to even think a problem through. We must react to the situation and deal with it no matter what the outcome. Time is all we have and we should use it wisely, making every minute precious and fulfilled. Take the time needed to be what you were intended to be and prepare for the second date. No one has the promise of the next second; we will all meet Jesus and face Him as we die.

Remove the dash between the dates and go through life with the enjoyment of living. Don't allow your life to pass with such a pace that the days fade into each other. Take time to be a part of your life and family, cherish the moments you are given and be thankful for them. The blessings of life will be sweeter if you recognize them and remember where they came from.
