As the long time usage of the dell laptop, its ac adapter maybe the easiest to getting broken or have some problems. In fact, if a power adapter ceases to work as it's supposed to, checking its output can tell you whether the problem lies with the adapter or elsewhere. What's more, once we buy a new ac adapter, we could also check its output to see if it is full output as described. Generally speaking, with a multi-meter, we could check the laptop ac adapter as well as other power adapters (such as for mobile phone etc) very convenient

Here are the steps I used for testing my Dell NX061 AC Adapter output:

First of all, I would It is unplug the Dell NX061 AC Adapter from the laptop. Let it cool down. Leave it plugged into its power source. This step is very necessary and important to every aspect related to laptop check or replacement.

Secondly, I would find the detailed input and output information on the power adapter. 19.5V 3.34A , which is the output of Dell NX061 AC adapter. This is normally found on a thicker, non-cord part of the adapter. Next to the word "Output," you will see a number with a "V" beside it. That's the output in volts. Make note of this number. Near the output information, you'll also see a diagram that shows which part of the plug is negative and which is positive. With most, the inside of the plug is positive, but be sure to check because sometimes this varies.

Then and the most important step: check the multi-meter's manual for instructions on how to set the multi-meter to the appropriate voltage( which should fit with the output of the power adapter you tested). The method varies between brands of multi-meter. Touch the probes of your multi-meter to the appropriate locations on the power adapter's plug. One probe should be inside the plug; the other should be touching its exterior.

After the above steps, just read the voltage shown on the multi-meter's screen. It should be close to the number you made note of in Step 2. For my Dell NX061 ac adapter, it should near or same to 19.5v 3.34a. If it's too far off, there must be a problem. So the only thing you could do is trying to purchase a new power adapter as soon as possible.

Addition: lots of dell ac adapter have the same output, such as Dell PA-21 AC Adapter(19.5V 3.34A).
