The Development Of Modern Communications
When it comes to modern communications it seems that there are three main routes that can be taken
, from the hardline traditional landline phone network, mobile phone networks, and of course the Internet. Each of these options comes with its own advantages and disadvantages, so each have strengths and weaknesses when it comes to finding a device for home communications.
The traditional landline telephone was first introduced by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876, and 136 years down the line and the technology is virtually the same now as it was then. The hook connects the user to the phone network whenever the phone is lifted off of the receiver and the microphone transmits the analogue signal through a pair of copper wires to the receiving end where the sound is converted and amplified. One difference between the modern landline and the original landline is the fact that modern equivalents now convert the acoustic signal into a digital one; this allows the signal to be transported via fibre optic cables. Theres no doubt that, despite the versatility and accessibility provided by new digital technology and mediums, the landline telephone still remains a popular communications device for households all around the world, providing a cheap reliable and secure service.
Almost one hundred years after the birth of the first telephone the mobile phone first hit the market in the 1970s, these operate on a cellular network much like a walkie-talkie or cordless telephone. The mobile phone certainly was a liberating innovation for communication allowing the user to make calls from any where in the world that could receive signal from a network provider. However, when mobiles first came about they werent as mobile as youd expect, and these sizable pieces of kit didn't always receive the best coverage. But nowadays there are a number of different network providers that can provide good coverage in most locations making mobiles far more useful. Making calls from a mobile generally tends to be more expensive that using a landline, though there some other advantages, like the mobility, and the ability to send data such as picture messages.
In the present day we are now seeing a digital takeover as the Internet proves itself to be a truly versatile and effective medium. Already there are a number of options for communicating, from emails to social networking sites, to video calls via Skype. Furthermore it is extremely economical option as there are no costs aside from the price of the broadband itself, and you can contact people from virtually anywhere in the world.
