Getting a legal job as a solicitors means you could find yourself being employed with a law firm, government or prosecution service but only within the confines of that business. You wouldn't necessarily be the defending party or prosecutor for clients.

Working as a barrister means you present the legal cases to the courts for your clients. Acting on behalf of your clients means that you utilise your skills, knowledge and expertise to win their case. Very rarely are barristers instructed to pursue a case without the involvement of a solicitor.

Before an individual can qualify as a barrister and achieve tenancy (a secured position in a barristers chambers) you must first undertake training. Training can take between two and four years depending on the country you are training in and requires time to be spent at bar school and time spent completing a pupillage.

A pupillage is often segmented into two or three periods of training, each being six months. This involves shadowing a qualified individual. Once this has been completed. working as a active barrister for specific cases is made available to you. Expect severe competition, stressful situations and very little time to yourself while you prove yourself among your peers, fighting for one position with four or five others doing the same.

Once you have achieved tenancy, the work does not stop there, your must then continue to prove yourself to ensure an impeccable record to establish yourself as a expert in your specialty.

Each role has its function, to better establish the difference, a solicitor acts as an attorney of law, they take the place of the client to achieve the most appropriate course of action to achieve a result. A barrister becomes part of the process when a requirement is met to do so.
