. The differences start with qualifications. Medicare, dictates that the person is to be no younger than 65, or a senior citizen and be receiving disability to qualify for this type of health insurance. Medicaid, on the other hand looks more at the financial need of a single individual. The individual can either be a child or senior citizen with a very low income for support. While the differences might not seem like much, they do have a significant impact on the people who depend on them.

Next is the topic of benefits that is a part of both of these health insurance plans. Medicare will supply the receiptant with coverage for a hospital stay, doctor's office visit and most every other medical expense. It also includes coverage for short term nursing home visits, but does not include long term care facilities such as nursing homes or other similar care that the person might be in need of. Medicaid will however pay for long term care in such facilities as a nursing home or any other long term treatment care that is necessary.

With Medicare, a person does not have to worry about paying for their assisted living, residential care facilities, and adult foster care. This is because there are no conditions with Medicare. With Medicaid, it is according to the state whether or not, they will pay for assisted living, resident care, and adult foster care.

Medicare requires that a person receiving care at a nursing home must be a patient at a hospital for at least three days and then released to the nursing home for continued care. Medicaid on the other hand doesn't have a time limit that must be honored and it will pay for the persons nursing home stay indefinitely.

The fourth and final fifth difference between Medicaid and Medicare is medications and home health care. Medicare will only pick up the medications tab of a patient if they are receiving care in a hospital, while Medicaid will not cover any medications. Medicare only pays for a home health nurse to administer medical help while Medicaid not only pays for the assistance of a home health nurse and their duties medically, but will pay for help with daily activities, such as cooking, cleaning and etc.
