Managed hosting is based on dedicated servers and configurable managed services such as security products, back up and storage. As it's a dedicated environment it has higher security than shared infrastructure, but less flexibility as the amount of servers and bandwidth is set at a monthly amount.

Private cloud or virtualisation as it is also known is also a dedicated hosting environment, but it has greater flexibility than pure managed hosting. Servers are virtualised into separate VMs (virtual machines) meaning a company can choose to switch off VMs when they do not need them and then turn them on/pay for them only when required, such as unexpected peaks in traffic or during traditionally busy times for their site. Bringing the best of cloud technology and managed hosting together, private clouds are a popular choice for those seeking cost-saving scalability with a more traditional approach.

Public cloud is based on a shared infrastructure where companies can buy as much or little computing resource as they require it. Users will experience the benefits of having nearly infinite scalability platform, with the ability to distribute files and content to millions of users worldwide quickly and easily. Spikes in traffic are easily manageable with the public cloud, benefitting those who could have unexpected or unpredictable surges in traffic. However as it is a shared infrastructure it doesn't sit behind a dedicated firewall, therefore it is less customised for security and lacks the ability to be fitted to a company's specific needs.

It is worth bearing in mind your own specific needs for security, flexibility and scalability in choosing which type of hosting solution is the most appropriate for deploying within your organisation.
