The Differences In Horse Tack
There are countless riding disciplines in the world of horses
. Different breeds may have their own standards, thus requiring specific types of equipment. As history would have it, there are two basic forms of riding: Western and English. Not only is there a difference in riding technique, the equipment or tack is very different.
Western Horse Tack
Western saddles are much larger and built to distribute weight equally on the horses back and for working comfort. Having a horn and a large comfortable deep seat, riders ride with a slight bend to the knee and sit the horses gaits. Types of western saddles include show, work, trail, barrel racing, endurance, roping, reining and cutting saddles. All are configured slightly different to accommodate their specific discipline. Show saddles such as the Billy Royal Supreme Champion saddle is made of exceptional quality leather with sterling silver plate accents.
Work saddles such as the Billy Royal Classic Work saddle or the Comfort Classic ll are fine examples of roughout training saddles for everyday use. No matter which saddle is used, a properly fitting pad should be used under the saddle. Impact Gel and DuraTech Fleece Lined Canvas Training pads are made with comfort and function in mind. Schneiders Show pads and blankets are New Zealand wool in solids and prints to match show outfits.
A bridle is made up of a headstall, bit, curb chain and reins. Headstalls come in show or work styles in either a one-ear, two-ear or browband model. Western bridles are made up of split reins measuring between 7 to 8 long with riders using only one hand.
English Horse Tack
English saddles are smaller and lighter with the rider dependent on close contact with their horse. The English saddle is made up of the saddle itself, leathers, girth and iron (the extras being referred to as fittings). Riders ride with a shorter bent leg and post at the trot. The flaps of the saddle are padded to allow the knees to comfortably grip while posting and jumping.
The fit of an English saddle is important and at times needs to be shimmed using riser pads and wither pads to balance the saddle. Dura-Tech Pro Air Hunt Pads and E-Z View English Saddle Pads provide the ultimate comfort for training or show.
English bridles consist of the headpiece itself, caveson, browband and one or two continuous reins depending on the type of bit. Joseph Sterling or Pinnacle Fancy Stitch bridles come complete (minus the bit) and are available in cob, full size and oversize.
