Rugby football is a term that can refer to two forms of the sport rugby union and rugby league

. Rugby union is mostly played at an amateur level, while professional rugby league tournaments are played all over the world. The sport has transcended generations, and is continuing to make its way to different countries in the world. It has even made a following in the United States, where it has had previous difficulty owing to the popularity of American football.

Professional rugby league has had a huge following in the United Kingdom and the Oceania regions. Countries such as Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea have taken up the sport and formed their own rugby league clubs. Tournaments such as the Rugby League World Cup and the Rugby League Four Nations Series.

While the sport shares some similarity with American football, some minor differences in rules and playing conditions sets rugby league apart from other athletic competitions. Generally, American football games last longer than the 80-minute rugby league matches. It is played at a much slower pace than the more hectic rugby league because the field is reset after each tackle in American football.

While the Americans have the Super Bowl, rugby league enthusiasts look forward to seeing the Rugby League World Cup. First held in 1954, the World Cup has been coveted by rrugby league clubs who represent the member nations of the Rugby League International Federation, the sports global governing body.


Rugby league has also made its way to the younger generation. Schools and universities have begun training students to play in their own rugby league club and even compete in friendly tournaments that encourage camaraderie and sportsmanship. Tournaments such as the Toyota Cup or the National Youth Competition have continued to mold players under 19 years old in order to prepare them for a potential professional career.

The immense popularity of rugby league in the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand has crossed over the gender line, with the inauguration of the Womens Rugby League World Cup in 2000. Currently, New Zealand holds the record for taking home the most Womens Rugby League World Cup championships in history.
