The first type of codec is the XviD codec, which is an MPEG-4 compliant video codec that is most used today. High quality and high compression rates make this codec a well-used format for the movie market.

The next one is an extreme in file compression, that which is the MJPEG codec. MJPEG is short for Motion JPEG, and like with the quality that is linked with jpeg images, it boasts the highest compression rate amongst the other codecs, but with that comes the penalty in terms of image quality. There's a noted significant loss in quality. A lot of editing systems though are using the MJPEG format. The major feature that they note is the compression rate.

DivX also offers high quality compression. The shining feature of this codec is that it offers multiple language support, competent visual quality, speed and compression. The only debacle with this codec is its synchronization issues. A lot of compatibility problems arise from DivX as well, which is why most users go for its counterpart, the XviD codec.

The Microsoft MPEG-4 Video codec comes packaged with the default Windows Operating System. MPEG is short for Moving Pictures Experts Group, and it's not a lie if I say that it's also a household word nowadays due to its popularity. Generally, MPEG-4 is your average Joe. Gives good quality compression and compatibility that is quite needed in the market. Against DivX, MPEG comes to a close second.
