The Different Types Of Fluid You Need For Your Vehicle

, your vehicle needs certain fluids in order to perform right. These fluids all serve different purposes, but if one was lacking, it could very well effect the performance of your car. It might not only effect the performance, but the safety of the vehicle could be in jeopardy, which means you and all of your loved ones that ride in it could be at risk as well. It is important to keep the fluid levels up in your car and to have them checked regularly to see if they are low or dirty and need replacement.

Brake Fluid

Brake fluid is probably the most important fluid in the car you drive. The brakes need fluid to keep the system running properly. Without fluid to make the discs open and close, the brakes would lock up. If they lock up, you either will not be able to drive, or your brakes will not work. Neither option is good when you are driving down the road, especially if it's at a high rate of speed.

Transmission Fluid

Transmission fluid is what keeps the car running down the road. If there is a leak in the transmission and the fluid gets up, your engine could seize up and you could be left stranded on the side of the road. The transmission fluid should be checked after 40,000 miles, and then replaced if it is dirty or if it is showing signs that it is dirty.

Antifreeze

When you live in the north and have a brutally cold winter, you need a car that can still run. Antifreeze will keep all of the fluids in your car from, well, freezing. The weather might be cold outside, but the antifreeze will keep everything in the inside working. Make sure your antifreeze is rated to what your lowest winter temperatures will be.

Power Steering Fluid

The power steering fluid is what will make your car turn easier. Have you ever driven a tractor or a lawn mower that didn't have power steering, and it felt like you had a horrible arm workout afterwards? That might be what it feels like in your car or truck if you don't have power steering fluid in the vehicle. The fluid keeps the steering column turning. Then, there is little effort from you as you drive the vehicle. When it seems harder to turn the wheel, you might want to check and see if there is a slow leak with the fluid causing the problem.

Windshield Washer Fluid

Have you ever driven around at night and had a bug smash right in front of you? Of course, it splattered everywhere and made you unable to see. If you have windshield washer fluid, you can quickly and safely get that bug out of your line of vision so that you can see what actually matters, which is the road. Windshield washer fluid might not seem important, but when you think about it, if you can't see the road, how can you drive at all? You might need to keep extra on hand if you live on a dirt road or drive through an area with a lot of dust. Put a gallon in the back of your vehicle so that you always have some on hand.
