Fog lights are generally employed in order to reduce the glare and improve visibly. Now let us take a look of the various types of fog lights employed in automobiles.
LED fog lights
LED fog lights use simple LEDs for illumination. They have a lens designed in order to keep the light low. LED lights are much more efficient than ordinary lights as they dont have any filament to burnout. They will have a long life when compared to other lamps. LED lights are available in different color variations. The different color variants are caused by different materials used in their manufacture. Other advantages of LED fog lights are they are not affected by vibrations, they utilize less power and they generate less heat.
HID fog lights
HID is the acronym for High Intensity Discharge. Here the xenon gas is ignited by an electric charge. Like the LED lights the HID lights also dont have any filament in it. The gas is electronically energized and is sustained in between two electrodes and hence the light is emitted. The main advantage of xenon lights is the increased amount of light produced. Hence it can produce wider beam patterns. It is estimated that a HID light can produce about 70 percent more light when compared to standard halogen.
Halogen fog lights
Halogen bulbs are the ones which were used earlier as fog lamps. Halogen lights are of three types namely H1, H2 and H3. H1 can give out 29 lumens / watt, H2 33 lumens/watt and H3 26 lumens / watt. Because of the high power consumption and other factors halogen lamps are not much preferred nowadays.
On the basic of the color emitted the fog lights are subdivided into white and yellow fog lights. Yellow light are used more and some of its reasons are:
In the case of yellow fog lamps , the amount of backscatter into drivers eye is less when compared to green or blue and hence yellow fog lights can see the seen better in fog or a snow fall
One of the main cause of accidents in foggy climate is the driver is not able to see the opposite vehicle because of fog. But as the yellow lights are more visible than the white lights it offer a better chance of survival.
