. It is a component of a control system that senses the temperature of a system to maintain the system's temperature near a desired set point. The thermostat maintains the temperature by switching heating or cooling devices either on or off. The name of thermostat is derived from the two Greek words thermos means "hot" and statos means "a standing".

A thermostat is used as a control unit for a cooling or heating system or work as a component part of a heater or air conditioner. Thermostats use different sensors to measure the temperature of a system, equipment or room equipment. These may control the heating or cooling apparatus by direct mechanical control, Electrical signals and Pneumatic signals

A programmable room thermostat is an advanced form of thermostat; it allows different temperatures to be set for different periods and can work accordingly throughout a day, night or even a week. A programmable room thermostat offers the facility of combining the function of a time switch with thermostat, and also gives feature of 'night setback'.
