The Different Ways Of Pronouncing Dragon Ball Z

People seldom delve deeply upon the pronunciation of their favorite show as their main objective is to watch the show at any cost

. The same holds true for Dragon Ball Z episodes. The presence of Z in the show name has led to different ways of pronouncing it. Being internationally acclaimed, the show is viewed by millions across the world and thereby its pronunciation is affected from region to region. In this article, the varied ways in which the show is pronounced in different countries is being discussed.

In America, the letter Z is pronounced as Zee, so the shows title is voiced as Dragon Ball Zee. All the marketing materials as well as the video games depict the series as Dragon Ball Zee. Even the theme song of the Dragon Ball Z episodes contains the lyrics Dragon Ball Zee.

On the contrary, in the United Kingdom where the Queens English is still prevalent, Z is pronounced as Zed and not Zee. The English alphabets also end with a full stop after Zed. So, they pronounce the show as Dragon Ball Zed.

In Australia and New Zealand, both Zed and Zee are used. When the letter stands alone, it is normally pronounced as Zed. However, their English alphabet ends with Zee and they pronounce the letter as Zed in words. For example, Zebra is not pronounced as Zee-bra as in America but Zed-bra.

The Canadians speak a combination of American and Queens English which has led to the formation of Canadian English. So, people who watch Dragon Ball Z episodes may call Z as Zed or Zee depending upon the region they belong to. In Canada, apart from English, French is also a major language and French people voice Z as Zed. So, Canadians who speak French will pronounce the show as Dragon Ball Zed.

Countries of Western Europe vary considerably in the pronunciation of Z. Spanish utter Z as Ceta, Swede voice it as Zeta while Germans call it Zed. However, the American pronunciation of Dragon Ball Zee is the most popular across the world.

Coming to Japan, where the series originated, the letter Z is pronounced as Zetto based on the Latin Zeta although the letter does not have any place in Japanese language. So, the Japanese name of the series is Doragonbru Zetto

But what does Z actually denote? The creator of Dragon Ball Z episodes had added the Z to the series as he wanted to give finishing touch to the series. He was exhausted as the demand for the series was quite outstanding and the show never got cancelled. So, he wanted to end the show and as Z is the last letter of the English alphabet, he added it to the show name. However, the series became even more popular and was followed by another series Dragon Ball GT!!
