The Difficulty Of Selling A Home That Smells Like Cigarettes

It is difficult enough to sell a home these days with the housing market in a slump the way it is

. Your home will have to be priced to sell as well as show very well. This usually means getting rid of unnecessary clutter and perhaps some inexpensive updates that you might even be able to yourself. A home on the market to sell needs to be a open as possible to make the space appear as large as you can especially in condominiums, apartments and townhouses. A fresh coat of pain on the walls never hurts either to give it a brand new look.

Not only is the way your home looks important to your selling advantage, but how the home smells as well. If a buyer walks into a home that looks really good, but smells really bad, they are automatically going to be turned off. There is something about the sense of smell that can either make a potential buyer be automatically interested or repulsed. There are several smells that do this to someone looking at your home and that is a strong smell of animals, especially cat smells because they are so hard to get rid of, a moldy, musty smell and stench of smoke, namely, tobacco smoke.

Now, if you have any of these smells in your house, it is not hopeless. You might be able to tackle the smells yourself and get them removed or you can hire a professional cleaning service to do it for you. Before you begin the smell removal or allowing company you hire to come in, get rid of all of the clutter first. There is no sense to clean things you might be getting rid of anyway. Remove all of decorations from the walls and as much off of the floors as possible. Clean out the closets, basement and attic. These are all things that need to be done before you stage your home for selling anyway.

Once all of any unnecessary things have been removed, then you can begin the cleaning and deodorizing process. Ceilings and walls must be cleaned even if you plan to repaint them. Repainting over the sticky tar residue of tobacco smoke is not a good idea. Often times trying to pain over nasty walls and ceiling will only cause the stains to bleed through and ruin your new coat of pain.

Once you have cleaned all surfaces in the home, shampooed carpets, mopped the floors, and cleaned any upholstered furniture that should take care of a lot of the odors. If you can still notice the smells, no matter what it came from, if you did not hire a professional cleaner, you might have to get one to come in anyway to pinpoint where the rest of the smell is coming from and get rid of it.
