The Dip Between Hindscarth And Dale Head The Lake District

There is even less of a dip between Hindscarth and Dale Head

, than between the former and Robin son. I have not a six inch ordnance map handy at the moment of writing, but I think the height of the neck is just over 2,000 feet. From here a long, spiky, rocky ridge rises at once, and is by far the most interesting part of the day's work. Forty minutes (from Hindscarth) of fairly easy going, brought me to the cairn of Dale Head, 2,473 feet above sea level, where I sat on the lee side of the cairn, as there was a cold wind up here, for fifteen or twenty minutes. There was no spring up here, unfortunately, and it was lucky that I had filled my flask at the little well on the other side of Robinson. The water .was no longer as icy cold as when it left the parent well, but it was better than nothing.

The threat of bad weather had so far not been fulfilled. There was still a hint of rain in the air, rout none came while I was on the hills, and there was no mist, and I sat there for some time enjoying the view. This is no 1 exactly one of the very best viewpoints in the Lake District, but there was much to be seen that was interesting. The wild and rocky upper chamber of the eastern branch of the Newlands Valley just below looked singularly attractive, and Honister Crag behind me was very impressive, though naturally rather less so from up here than it is from the pass. Farther behind still the Gable and the Scafell peaks form a most imposing background.

Altogether a fascinating spot, as, indeed, the summit of almost any mountain must needs be more or less, but it was rather too cold today to make it altogether agreeable to linger too long. Then I set about my descent to Honister Pass, and I found it rather complicated, and was thankful that the mist had not materialized, and that I could at any rate see the direction in which I was going. There was no path at all on the upper slopes, and at first I kept in the direction of Great Gable, then in that of Honister Crag just over the way, which, of course, was the most conspicuous feature of the nearer landscape. But I forgot that the Crag is some distance west of the top of the pass, and I found that I was getting rather too much to the right, and that there were some tremendous crags just in front of me. Then, veering to the left, I got lost in the wilderness of the upper quarries.

I went to some of the huts to ask how I could best get down to the road, but there was nobody there, and only then did I recollect that it was Saturday afternoon, and that the quarries would, of course, ,be forsaken. Also, from the state they were in, I fancy that these upper huts are no longer in use. I followed a quarry path down to the lower workings, but soon lost it again in a perfect maze of quarries, huts, engine houses, refuse heaps, etc., etc., and could find no legitimate way out of all this. Then, keeping farther to the left, after a time I caught sight far below of the road that comes up from the top of the pass.
