The Diversity of the Screen Printing Process
The U.K. printing industry in general has a wide range of manufacturers utilising
different processes in order to produce finished goods. The most common form of printing is offset litho which on the whole supplies catalogues, brochures, flat sheet paper publications, flyers and business cards. However within this manufacturing niche printing is restricted mainly to flat sheet paper based substrates and thin card.
Screen printingis an industry which has been existence for many years. Screen printing is a more specialised process than other print methods being able to print on a much wider range of materials. This provides the customer with much greater choice regarding the types of media to advertise their products.
The overall majority of screen printed products are bespoke in nature. An individual customer will have a specific requirement to promote its business. Generally screen printers do not supply off the shelf standard items, most are printed to order and to specific instructions in order to promote a particular product.
The vast majority of screen printers have their core business based around screen printing on self adhesive vinyl. The principal applications of this material are window stickers, product identification labels and promotional graphics. The most common use which is viewed by the general public on a daily basis is car stickers. Indeed the motor industry is probably the largest user of this type of product.
However there are many more examples of screen printed products. Continuing on the in car theme all vehicles have to display a vehicle road licence which is often contained within a screen printed tax disc holder. Also many dealerships will have on site promotion in the form of a screen printed car blade printed on fluted polypropylene or foamex which is fixed into a crowner on the vehicle roof.
Plastic based substrates are commonly used across a broad spectrum of finished products. Examples of this are most forms of signage both for internal and external use, screen printed dry wipe boards, plastic tags, circuit boards and polypropylene cases. Also many flexible based plastics are screen printed such as ring binders which have many uses both in general industry and education.
Other materials commonly screen printed include metals and timber. There are a large number of examples of this including machine control panels, and facia plates and wooden boxes and cases. A broad range of fabrics are also screen printed, the most common are of which is t shirts.
It is obvious therefore that screen printing has a major role to play in the overall print market. By far it is the most versatile process of all in terms of the range of materials it can be applied to. In this respect it is highly unlikely that it will replaced by other types of print media.
