The Domino Effect of Leaky Gut Syndrome
Undigested food particles, foreign substances, environmental toxins, bacteria and yeast, which are normally kept in the digestive tract are frequently absorbed into the bloodstream, which the liver must neutralize and pass out of the body.
Our Stressed Out Liver The liver, which is already strained from processing the daily metabolic wastes created by cellular activity, becomes overburdened with this added responsibility. Unable to manage the tremendous toxic load, the unprocessed toxins get re-circulated back to the bloodstream, causing further build up of toxins over time which results in even more damage. When the body cannot get rid of these toxins, it stores them either in fat or protein tissues. Chemicals like pesticides tend to be stored in fat, while heavy metals like mercury, aluminum and cadmium are stored in muscles, bones, organ tissues (i.e. liver, kidneys etc), brain and spinal cord.
Research findings Autopsy reports from 30 deceased individuals have shown that mercury from fish and dental amalgams are concentrated most highly in the brain. According to a clinical study conducted by Dr Dietrich Klinghardt M.D., evidence points to the high correlation between the presence of heavy metals in the limbic system of the brain and muscle tissue and fibromyalgia. (Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized primarily by widespread pain throughout the body).
Liver Detox Pathways To make matters worse, a stressed out liver can actually generate more toxins in its desperate attempt to clean them up. To appreciate how this is possible we need to look take a brief look at how our liver carry out its job. There are really two phases in the process of liver detoxification - Phase One and Phase Two. In Phase One, some of the toxic load is converted into molecules that have free radical activity and can be more carcinogenic than the original substance. All is well so long as the Phase Two part of the process can quickly metabolize these free radicals and carcinogens. It is at this second pathway that these volatile substances are transformed into a water-soluble compound that can be excreted through urine or bile. The main detoxification processes in Phase Two are glucuronidation, sulfation, and glutathione and amino acid conjugation. However, when this second pathway is compromised, the free radicals and carcinogens start to overflow and cause damage in the liver or elsewhere in the body.
Symptoms of Stressed Out Liver This effect of leaky gut syndrome shows up in a wide range of health problems including chronic fatigue syndrome, recurrent infections resulting from low immunity, asthma, fibromyalgia, arthritis, acne, eczema, psoriasis, memory loss, migraine, attention deficit disorder (ADD), and even autism and cancer.
Ending the Domino Effect Many people with chronic health conditions have livers that are impaired to some extent which they are not aware of. It is difficult to treat chronic illnesses effectively if liver function is not restored. This is because they are less able to tolerate many foods, medications, and even nutritional supplements, which hinders their body's healing process. And since a significant amount of the toxins the liver has to deal with comes from the digestive tract, the first thing to do is to clean up the gut. This is why a good intestinal and liver detoxification program is always an essential part of a successful treatment protocol for any chronic disease.
