Argentina is the second largest country in South America in terms of land area

. The population is a healthy mix of people of Italian, Spanish or French descent. Because of the country's temperate climate, people are very relaxed and even the country's capital of Buenos Aires is much slower compared to other country's capitals.

Despite being a relaxed society, there are some social taboos that often make tourists to the country the recipients of harsh reactions from the locals. The following are some of the tips on the do's and don'ts in Argentina:

1)Pouring wine with the left hand while grasping the neck of the bottle is a definite no-no. This is due to the concept that the left hand is used for personal hygiene purposes;

2)Doing the OK sign or the thumbs up sign is considered vulgar actions in the country. Saying okay would be better and safer;

3)Showing up on time for a party is considered rude. Being fashionably late, be it half an hour or two is considered as normal;

4)Eating on the street or on public transportation vehicles is big no-nos. Food is considered sacred and eating in public is desecration of the food;

5)Yawning is considered rude in Argentina, as it conveys boredom or lack of interest with the host. Do close your mouth or even excuse yourself when you do yawn;

6)Kissing on the cheek as a greeting is normal in the country. Often, meeting a person ends with a kiss on the cheek and a cursory ciao;

7)Avoid wearing flip-flops or beach sandals in public. Argentinians are very fashion conscious and the key is to dress conservatively and modest for comfort;

8)Yerba Mate is the national drink. There is a ritual to drinking in the country, be it yerba mate or even wine. The drink is passed clockwise and everyone drinks off the same glass or cup as a sign of friendship and acceptance;

9)When being feted by a host, bring a gift such as flowers, candy, pastries or liquor. When one receives a gift, open it right away to show gratitude to the gift giver;

10)Don't make the devil horns sign with the fingers (extended pinky and index finger while the middle and ring fingers are bent) as this means one's wife is committing adultery against them.

These ten simple tips would help in gaining new friends and making new memories in the country. Argentina is a very laid back but vibrant society with its own set of rules that tourists and guests need to master for their happiness and enjoyment.
