The Drift Ghost Has Arrived
Its been a big year for the action camera market: from the launch of the new GoPro
- the Hero3 - to first time forays from the likes of Sony and JVC, the standard is higher than ever before.
The latest manufacturer to announce the release of its new camera is industry veteran Drift Innovation, and in keeping with other new releases it packs quite a punch.
The Drift Ghost follows in the footsteps of old Drift cameras in many ways, most notably in the form of its streamlined design, matte black finish, rotatable lens and integrated screen. However, while it may look similar, it has a host of new and improved features which really set it apart from its predecessors.
Video and photo
The Ghost can shoot at 1080p at 30fps, 720p at 60fps, as well as 120fps in standard definition, while its new 7 Element lens design allows the camera to produce outstanding colour vibrancy and sharpness.
It doesnt fall short when it comes to still images either, as its capable of capturing photos at 5, 8 or 11 megapixels in it various modes. The Ghost also allows the user to snap 2MP photos during video recording.
Gorilla Glass LCD Screen
The built-in colour screen has always been a key feature of Drift cameras, and the Ghost follows suit. However, the Ghosts LCD screen is covered with durable Gorilla Glass, which makes it much less susceptible to scratching and damage than past models.
At two inches, the full-colour display is also larger than previous cameras, and new 3D icons located on top of the camera allow the user to navigate to almost any setting or menu within just four clicks.
Two-way remote
Another feature synonymous with Drift cameras is the wireless remote control and the Ghosts new Two-Way remote marks an industry first. As well as allowing the user to control the camera remotely, LED lights on the remote indicate which mode the camera is in.
The remote is functional up to 10m from the camera and lasts for up to eight hours with constant use. Perhaps its only drawback is that it doesnt work underwater.
Wi-Fi compatibility
Wi-Fi connectivity has become something of a standard for the latest generation of action cameras, and the Ghost is no different. Using the soon to be released Drift mobile app, users will be able to operate the camera from their smart device, controlling a range of actions such as changing settings, shooting stills whilst recording, and even downloading footage straight to the device for instant upload to the likes of Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
Continuous Loop Video
While all of the features listed above are market-leading in their own right, theres one feature in particular which is causing quite a stir with potential buyers and rival manufacturers alike.
Its called Flashback mode, or Video Tagging and it works like this: when in Flashback mode, the camera continuously records, without saving the captured video to the memory card. When the video is tagged, the camera backtracks up to five minutes before you have hit the button, and saves the video.
For example, if a snowboarder spends hours trying to perfect a single trick, they probably dont want to record hours of failed attempts. By hitting the tag button as soon as the trick is landed, the camera will store the five minutes of footage captured prior to and after the button is hit.
To summarise, the
Drift Ghost is one of the most well-rounded cameras on the market at the moment, and despite hot competition from the likes of GoPro, Contour, Sony and JVC, the Ghost is sure to be at the top of a lot of Christmas lists this year.
