The Eagles and The Environment

The Philadelphia Eagles are the first professional squad to announce that their stadium will become entirely self-sustaining. The team announced that it would install solar, wind, andco-generationpower systems on its stadium so that all of its energy uses would be from supplies that were on-site.

The Eagles had previously purchased 100 percent clean energy through a credit program, the Eagle COO Don Smolenski remarked. However, this new solar program along with the wind and co-generation power systems takes the squad to a new level of environmental stewardship and community participation.

When the new season starts in September of 2011, The Eagles home will have 80 spiral wind turbines, 2,500photovoltaicsolar panels along with a 7.5 megawatt natural gas and biodiesel cogeneration system according to a press release from the team.

The 30 million dollar project is a partnership with Solar Blue. Mr. Smolenski said the club spoke with a number of different companies and thought Solar Blue's plan to be the best.

The system will also send 4 megawatts of power back into the electricity grid during the squads' off-season, according to the press release. Incredibly, it will generate energy to power 26,000 residences.

Mr. Smolenski remarked that the program for "going green" was already started but this development was the culmination of that effort. When the go green initiative started it was small and dealt with waste and recycling issues.

The club started buying clean energy credits to offset its own use, Smolenski said. About a quarter of the club's energy was offset with clean credits by the end of 2003.

Mr. Smolenski believes the timing was right for a big change.
