The Easiest Way To Create A Buzz Lightyear Costume
Since his first appearance on Toy Story in 1995
, the buzz lightyear costume has been a favorite Halloween option for party-goers regardless of gender or age. The fond feelings held for this quirky space ranger has inspired my different versions of the outfit, yet it is immediately recognizable to all who view it.
Of all the characters to emulate he, perhaps, best of all possesses qualities we all wish we could acquire. Although somewhat eccentric in his need to follow the code of conduct for space rangers, he is a hero in every sense of the word. His willingness to defend his friends at all costs and his deep compassion for those less fortunate make him a character you can't help but fall in love with.
Although costumes are often purchased in stores and online fairly easily, making a costume of this kind is not all that difficult. White pants are a start and by using purple and green reflective tape the designs can be achieved fairly easily. Additionally, this light colored costume and reflective tape will ensure safety on dark nights. Ugg-boots or moon boots covered in foil and accented with the same green and purple tape that was used on the pants on the toes of the boots help to provide a cohesive look.
For the costume top you can use a white hooded sweatshirt, long-sleeved T-Shirt, or other similar shirt that is decorated with the reflective tape. Cardboard cutouts of the chest and back panels are easy to make. Measure chest, shoulders, and upper back leaving a cutout space for the head. You can achieved the colored green appearance with water-based paint after which reflective tape and buttons made previously can be added.
There are always other things one can use with a little imagination. For example, an alternative for the front and back covering is to use football pads which add size to the shoulders yet cover the chest and back. If painted with a water-based paint, they can be rinsed clean at the end of the evening.
The gloves, helmet, and buttons are optional, but add to the overall look of the costume when included. Any white gloves can be used and accented in the reflective tape. If gloves are not available, long white socks can be used instead. Any type of purple hood will work for the helmet or even a bike helmet which also provides extra protection while on the streets at night. To make the buttons, cardboard circles covered in felt and decorated with a felt tipped marker can add those details that make this costume unique.
The final touch is to make a set of wings. Cut cardboard twice the length of the arms and then paint it purple. Red and white stripes are then painted across the top and down the sides. Fold it in half and add straps. These can be made from duct tape, elastic, string, the reflective tape used previously, or ribbon. Once tied on they will stand out to the sides like the jet wings worn by Buzz himself in the cartoon. The look can then be finished off with light makeup.
For those who love the Toy Story movies, and especially want a buzz lightyear costume, spending a fortune isn't necessary. Although you can spend quite a bit on this outfit in stores and online, making it can be more fun and result in a finished product that says you have arrived. What is most important is that the details are included as that's what says, "To infinity and beyond!" better than anything else.
