Just when you thought that it was enough to lock your doors every night, invest in a good home alarm system and make sure to turn it on, and find a better hiding spot for that extra key besides underneath the welcome mat, you are faced with an entire new world of criminal activity that can put your home security at risk. What are these threats, exactly? Here is a list of the most common modern dangers to your home security, and some easy-to-follow tips regarding how to avoid them!

1. Your address and phone number are published online.

It used to be that home addresses and phone numbers were only listed in the "white pages" for public consumption, a thick book published every year or so with the contact information of everyone in a confined geographical area. If someone wanted to find out your address, they really had to make an effort, especially if they were living in a different part of Michigan. Someone in Traverse City did not have the "white pages" for the city of Detroit. What's more, people could choose to remove their information by declaring their phone number's "unlisted". Now, everyone's personal information is listed in the online version of "white pages" available for all of the world to see with just the click of the mouse. You can have this information removed sometime, but once something was on the Internet, certain people can access this sensitive data forever (generally they are determined hackers not exactly the good guys!). While you may not be able to control random, public sites from listing information, you should ask any private organization such as your office or a social club to remove any information they have listed on their websites. Remember anyone can access public websites! Allowing your address and phone number to be available for all to see is a threat to your home security. If an organization wishes to have some kind of online directory available to its members, suggest that they password-protect it, or require some kind of log in so that only designated and approved members can see the information.

2. You post your phone number and/or address online.

Going through all of that effort to make sure that your address and phone number are not posted online by the "white pages" or any company or group you are involved with call become pointless in a few quick seconds if you post your own information online. Some people like to do this on social networking sites, figuring their friends, professional, contacts and acquaintances will have an easier time reaching them. But such an action is nothing less than a threat to your home security. While you may think you have outsmarted the system by adjusting your privacy settings, once again, you should never underestimate the power of hackers to break into your account. Do not give them any opportunities to victimize you. Keep the information to yourself!
