The Effects Of Cannabis

Cannabis is probably the worlds most popular casually used drug

. It has been estimated that up to 1 in 10 people around the world use it on a regular basis and even more in countries where it grows naturally. It is an ancient drug that has been used throughout history for medical, magical, and pleasurable purposes. It is often popularised in the media and there have been many cases where celebrities have openly admitted its use (more so in the music business where many musicians have claimed its use as a good source of their lyrical inspiration). It use has become so widespread that many people wouldnt think twice about asking to light up at a friends or to smoking it in public places.

So what are the effects? What happens when someone smokes a joint or eats a space cake and how long do these effects last? For most people this is a subjective question and the answers will vary depending upon how long a person has been using cannabis and how much they have taken. The point being that over time the body can build up a tolerance and it may take more to achieve the same effect than it would for a first time user. This leads on to a very important point here and one that should be noted and that is: no matter how much one smokes cannabis it is not known to be physically harmful (unlike many other drugs where the correct dosage is of paramount importance because over dosing can be lethal).

The effects are similar to a mild sedative and also a mild hallucinogen and can be felt usually within a few minutes of taking it. The user experiences a light headedness where objects and reality can become slightly distorted. Relaxed, happy and chilled are terms often used to describe these feelings. At this point depending upon how experienced the user is one can become talkative or get the giggles. Users also become more aware of their senses and become more conscious of time. These are the mild hallucinogenic feelings. Again depending upon the dosage then these feeling will vary in strength.

One of the most reported concerns with cannabis use is the claim that it greatly increases the likelihood of mental disorders such as schizophrenia. The basis of this is the fact that cannabis facilitates more internalisation of thoughts. ie thinking more. Being stoned increases awareness and therefore one begins to think more and have more conversations in ones head. A known effect of this is having profound revelations. Basically because the brain begins working more, then one starts to think more about things going on around. If one has not thought like this before, then it can feel quite profound to keep coming up with answers in ones own head to questions that one has not really considered before. Over time these profound revelations diminish because they no longer become new and are more normal the more a person continues to get stoned.

The same becomes true for the giggles and bouts of uncontrollable spontaneous laughter. These feelings diminish over time as well and are no longer felt as strongly as they were in the beginning.

Another commonly experienced feeling and often described is the munchies. This is basically a strong craving for food or hunger pang which seems to manifest several hours after first taking cannabis. After 25 years experience with cannabis whereas the other feelings described above tend to diminish over time the munchies does not and I can say with authority that it is a very powerful and motivational feeling.

Having observed my behaviour in this area many, many times I am stunned at the power the munchies can have. Being approx 2 stone above what would be considered my ideal weight and my vanity being what it is, I can often, without problem, abstain from regular mealtimes when i havent smoked cannabis. A few hours after smoking cannabis however I experience a craving for food like nothing else. The internal justification that occurs in my mind wins virtually every time. Its not a craving for any particular food....just food! Whatever is in the fridge or cupboards will do...usually in some bizarre combinations. Not being medically trained i assume this is due to some kind of crash caused by the chemical processes involved when ingesting cannabis. I have often heard that breakfast is the most important meal and one should eat slow release foods to avoid the issue of sugar crashing well i can only summise that this must be a similar process with cannabis and something inside must deplete quite quickly because (and anyone who has experienced this will know exactly what I am referring to) the ensuing food cravings are very powerful and very real.

The effects of cannabis then are pretty mild when considering other drugs and probably the only concern one should have is on the waistline! It might be useful to buy a padlock for the fridge because the ensuing craving for food seems stronger than the craving for cannabis itself.

To truly find out the effects of cannabis one can really only experience it for oneself. A good way to do this is to buy cannabis seeds and grow your own marijuana. Marijuana seeds can be purchased from many outlets on the internet. The only issue here is that you need to live in a country that allows its cultivation and that is usually the problem because although it is not illegal to sell cannabis seeds in many countries it is usually illegal to plant them.
