The Effects of Sugar on Aging
Do you have a sweet tooth? So many of us do and it shows in how much sugar people
these days consume! When we think of eating too much sugar, we usually associate it with weight gain. But eating too much sugar can affect our health in so many different ways in addition to helping us to pack on extra pounds.
Weight gain is one of the main effects of having too much sugar in our diets. When we consume excess sugar, our bodies store the excess as fat. While we generally think of extra fat as a cosmetic problem, carrying excess weight can tax our internal organs. This in turn causes our bodies to age faster and our life expectancy to be shortened.
In addition to causing weight gain, a diet high in sugar can cause insulin resistance. If our bodies develop a resistance to insulin, there is a chance of developing diabetes. Diabetes is a serious disease that can lead to heart disease, problems with eyesight, circulatory problems, and other issues.
Something that many people don't realize is the fact that sugar creates glucose in our bodies that then binds to other proteins and causes them to become less flexible. This lack of flexibility affects the collagen in our bodies. This means that the arteries, lungs and tendons that contain collagen can become more rigid. This can contribute to high blood pressure and hardening of the arteries. As you can see, glucose interacting with the proteins has a negative effect on our bodies. Not only does it affect the internal working of our body, it also affects the skin which is contains collagen. As a result, a diet high in sugar can contribute to premature aging of the skin, causing the skin to wrinkle at a younger age.
Reducing the sugar in your diet can go a long way to improving your overall health and outward appearance. There are many products on the market that contain sugar replacements, but many of them have harmful chemicals that can also cause health issues. The best plan of action is to replace the sugar you normally eat with naturally sweet foods such as fruits and berries.
It is possible to reverse the effects of sugar on the body. Start today and improve your diet, cut out refined sugar and include more healthy fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. If you want to have good health and a good outward appearance, you need good fuel. Give your body the goodness it deserves with a healthy diet, you will be glad you did!
