The Efficient And Versatile Fluorescent Bulb
A proactive move which can readily be implemented to combat both rapidly increasing
climate change and runaway economic crisis is to change bulbs and fixtures in the home and business to fluorescents. This is especially easy to do with modern technology which has created a variety of user-friendly fixtures and the compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulb.
The CFL bulbs curl around in a "pig tail" shape and are fitted with a standard fitting which screws into a normal light bulb socket. A CFL bulb may save the typical user approximately $30 per bulb over its lifetime in electricity usage. They are also much more efficient than standard incandescent bulbs because they create light through a chemical reaction, whereas an incandescent bulb heats a metal filament which produces about 90% heat and only 10% light. A fluorescent bulb also lasts approximately 10 times longer than the incandescent.
Another savings bonus which comes with using energy saving lighting is that many electric utility companies now offer rebates and cost reduction incentives for changing over to these products. Check with local companies to see what advantages are offered in your area.
At present, Americans only purchase approximately five percent of CFL bulbs. A couple of reasons for the slow changeover is because of the initial higher cost of the bulb and also because of the tendency for a fluorescent bulb to flicker and delay in providing light when switched on. However, these problems have all but been eliminated through modern technology which has replaced magnetic ballasts with electronic ones. The average cost of a CFL is now around $2-3 each.
Also, the quality of light from newer versions of fluorescent bulbs is much better. Older fluorescents gave the room a washed out appearance, but today's models provide a much better light and one that is easier on the eyes. CFLs often supply a more pleasing light than the standard incandescent bulb.
Variety is another huge factor in switching to fluorescent lighting. An industry that was once quite limited has exploded in options for the consumer. Fluorescent overhead fixtures have been beautifully modernized and come in a large selection of pleasing shapes and styles. Small surface lights and fixtures are now available for those darkened spaces, such as utility rooms, closets and lengthy hallways.
There are also various styles of undercabinet and cove light fixtures which can transform a shadowy kitchen into a bright, warm work area for food preparation and entertaining of guests. Attractive wall sconces give a welcoming glow to entranceways, both indoors and out, or by straddling a fireplace, large wall mirror, or bed. Many styles of table, floor and Torchiere lamps are available with CFL fittings to add elegant style and mood to your living spaces. Many fluorescent fixtures can be used with dimmer switches which allow complete control of light intensity.
With so many fluorescent options available, a great opportunity now exists to reduce energy consumption and perhaps save money.
