The Electronic Future Of Keys

From the days when keys were a status symbol of wealth

, power, and privilege to the electronically coded keys that are phasing out the typical metal keys, the future of keys may play an interesting role in our security. The hand carving of keys was once considered an artful practice. The production of hand carved keys meant years of training and perfecting the process.

When the key cutting machine was invented it became much easier to get copies or spares made in advance. An emergency could be avoided by simply going to a local cutting machine and asking an employee of the facility to perform the task. Considering that there was little training needed for a wider margin of success, these types of cutting machines were found in hardware and do it yourself stores throughout the country.

While not a perfect solution, the semiautomatic key cutting machine can provide at least a 70 percent accuracy rate and is speedy to use. The grinding of these keys was done with cobalt, one pass over the key, and very little additional input.

Machines like this are relatively simple to operate. Placing each key in an opposite grip, the machine automatically traced the outline of the original key in order to produce a second one. Since this method was not completely accurate, it wasn't unusual for a customer to return to the place of purchase and have the technician try again.

The improvement of key cutters was essential and the micrometers, or the automatic key cutters were able to provide more accurate results. This machine made two passes instead of one over the key, and measurements were introduced to help people understand how to improve their accuracy without providing additional training to the employees of the store. However, while these are more accurate machines, there is no way to modify them to allow them to accept electronic keys.

Electronic keys are the future of keys. With laser and computer assisted cutting machines, the transition to fully electronic keys may be slow. These are coded disks, like the key card you place in a hotel room door. Since the inception of electronic key wireless ignition start, coded electronic keys are much more likely to provide safety measure that are not in place in most homes of today.
