Archeological History of Metal Art

The history of metal art can be traced from the diggings of archeologists around the world, particularly in Europe and East Asia. Metal craft might have some humble beginnings in the past with our ancestors able to find a way to mold and form armor plates, silver cups and bowls, musical instruments, bronze drums, helmets, and weapons like knives, swords and spears.

You just have to wonder how they were able to hammer metals into various shapes. In addition, they were able to create daily objects with intricate designs at that. Just imagine the tools they use and the process that they applied in those times. The art of metal crafting have really gone a long way since.

Bronze Age

Metal art extends back as far as the Early Bronze Age in 2700 BC; it has since improved through the course of the centuries. Metal work started to advance as artistic endeavors when it moved from bronze to different other metals like iron, lead, copper, silver and gold. You can see the development of artistic achievement in the decorative figures and statues found in excavation sites of the Aegean Bronze Civilization by Arthur Evans in Crete.

Geographical Sites

According to Richard Tansey, though people today have looked at Ancient Egypt as the place where metal art could have been born, Mesopotamia (modern day Iraq, southwestern Iran, southeastern Turkey, and northeastern Syria) is way ahead in terms of metal work from their Egyptian counterparts. Thus, metal crafting could have possibly emerged as early as the time of 3300 BC.

Dubbed as 'the Cradle Of Civilization,' discoveries of elaborate jewelries, masks, ornaments and bowls have been found in archeological sites in modern Iraq and Syria. In the same way different metal objects have been found in Greece, Egypt and some parts of Europe. This discoveries support the evidence that mankind have an intense desire to create and express itself in art.

Historical Importance

Even though work in metals would have not probably been referred to as an art in the past, the discoveries of metal work is an important link in our appreciation of human history. The only way for us to understand the different facets of human nature is by looking at the intricate designs of copper statues, bronze kitchen wares, plate armors, instruments and weaponry of the past. This helps us plot the dateline of evolution of man in terms of its diverse mode of expressions of aesthetics and needs.
