The Emerging Role Of Sustainability In Driving Corporate Identity

Many businesses are establishing sustainability practice as part of their mission statement

. This trend is growing and its now a primary corporate identity issue for major corporations. The approaches to sustainability vary between industries and companies, but some common trends are now apparent. In all industries, minimising environmental impacts and reducing waste is now a major priority for modern business.

Sustainability begins at home- In-house policies

Interestingly, sustainability as a concept in commerce is based as much on business principles as environmental concerns. The emerging reality of sustainability in industry is that it produces a large range of efficiencies, and naturally saves costs.

For example:

Industry is a major user of water supplies and power. Sustainable manufacturing processes are designed to use considerably less of both, reducing operational costs drastically. Over time, cumulative savings are huge, relative to the same production volumes. This is industrial design in its truest sense, adding profit and savings at the production end.

Sustainability is now established best industrial practice. It even acts as a quality control, because materials management is far better structured. Sourcing renewable materials and recycling adds considerable value to both the supply chain and waste elimination, being integrated into the product life cycle. This sourcing also locks in a dependable supply chain, much less vulnerable to market forces for scarce commodities.

The public image effect- Making a mission statement

In terms of public image, all major global industries are now making a genuine effort to engage with sustainability in their own fields. Commercial mission statements and environmental policies are now highly evolved, and based on best practices.

There are two basic reasons for this major paradigm shift from opposition on principle to environmental ideas:

1. Commercial reality. Sustainability is now irrefutably the better commercial option at all levels of business. Old style manufacturing is completely out of step with current technology. The extremely wasteful production techniques of the past, like producing a tonne of unnecessary waste and toxic gases with every product, simply arent acceptable. Theyre inefficient methods, and the amount of waste just proves how inefficient.

2. Major culture shifts. Modern social, political, industrial and business culture is no longer the mid 20th century Late Industrial Revolution model. Todays senior business managers and industrial designers have been educated in environmental concepts. The current corporate mission statements are based on years of experience and qualifications.

Sustainability in practice- How corporations approach their goals

Sustainability is now a business and a science. This approach may involve whole new methodologies being perfected, or using renewable materials to replace scarce types. It may involve completely new approaches to production. For example a 5 step chemical treatment may become a 2 step organic process, requiring no chemicals. There are no real limits to sustainable design.

The sustainability culture in the corporate world

Sustainability has been one of the most comprehensive reasons for the corporate worlds acceptance of environmental values. Even the corporate board room will now have sustainable interior design green star carpet, and a range of sustainable biomimicry-based products of its own.
