The End I s Here

Even though the Dallas Cowboys were sitting at a putrid 1-4 record heading into their

Monday Night home game against the New York Giants, it was hard to dispell them as a potential playoff team. Yes, they have horribly underachieved, and lost games they should have one. However, the talent level was through the roof, and not many teams were running away with playoff spots, as a 4-3 record got you in position in the ever tight NFC. While the Cowboys were down, they were not out.

Until last night, that is. The Cowboys led the Giants by a score of 13-7 when quarterback Tony Romo was planted hard into the ground while completing a pass to wide receiver Miles Austin. Romo would get up, but would not return. And he will not for a long time, as an injury to his collarbone is going to sideline him for eight weeks at the minimum, and most likely the remainder of the season. The Cowboys responded with fire at first, taking a 20-7 lead in the game on a Dez Bryant punt return.

After that, it was much more of the same that we have seen from Dallas in the past. Eli Manning had a career game, lighting up a Dallas secondary that left wide receivers open all night long. The Cowboys gave up four passing touchdowns to the Giants, and before you could blink, it seemed, the Giants rattled off an impressive 31 unanswered points to seize the game, and end the Cowboys chances at a season.

Jon Kitna stepped in and tried to lead the Cowboys back, but fell short. Chances are they go after the UFL's Jeff Garcia to fill their starting spot, but it is too little, too late. If Romo was in the game, would the outcome have been different? Unlikely, as the Giants were outgaining the Cowboys by a nearly 4 to 1 ratio at the time, and seemed ready to mount their comeback. In terms of comebacks, though, it does not seem as if the Cowboys are going to be able to have one in them. So much for the Super Bowl in the Big D.
