The End Of National Speed Limits

Motoring groups are warning plans to cut speed limits on our country roads will spell

the end of the national speed limit signs and confuse motorists with constantly changing speed limits on some rural roads. The proposed cut is to 40mph instead of the more common 60mph, on roads that appear dangerous in anyway i.e. if theyre particularly narrow, winding, or have tight bends. The moves were expected ever since a few weeks ago figures came out showing an increase in road deaths for the first time in 17 years.

Motoring groups say you cant always mollycoddle motorists and they should be left as they are at the moment. The majority of drivers do drive at a speed which is safe for the surroundings and it continues to be just a small minority who drive like they just dont care. The question is, will dropping the limits slow these irresponsible drivers down? Probably not, but I guess one fact will be at least when they hit an innocent person, that driver might not be travelling at the speed they may have been if the limits were to stay the same.

A roads collision history will also be taken into account when dropping speed limits. Roads that never or rarely see incidents will almost certainly be left alone. I dont think well see the complete abolishment of the national speed limit as most roads, in my opinion will be left as they are. 40mph is still a decent speed and I for one find myself regularly doing this on national speed limits anyway. After all, what is the rush? 40mph is relaxing, and more people should try it. I for one wont be sad to see many roads dropped to 40mph.

The argument that constantly changing speeds will confuse road users, to me, doesnt stand up. A road will be set to either national speed limit, or 40mph for its entirety. Motoring groups say there are many country roads with long straights that are easily appropriate for 60mph with the odd bend here and there that would require you to slow down to 40mph for example, and motorists should be left to judge this for themselves. The problem is, many dont do this. Its crazy the number of times I find myself coming round a bend and an oncoming car appears on my side of the road, as to make it round the bend at the speed theyre doing they need to cut the corner. So these corners wont the changed to 40mph on their own, that whole stretch of road will be, and I think for good reason too.

If people want to go at those speeds then get them onto the motorways and A roads, and allow the rest of us to enjoy our country roads safely. I welcome the change.
