conducted a survey regarding the biggest challenges that the UK IT industry faces. This survey questioned influential IT and data centre professionals who are based in the UK. They were questioned about the issue of power and the environment, 80% said that power costs are a concern to their business that is major. Almost 75% said that increasing environmental legislation is also a challenge that they classed as significant.

80% of people questioned said that the most significant consideration when buying capital equipment is energy efficiency. 75% of participants said they already had created a policy to reduce carbon. The motivation behind this was found to be to reduce operational costs. Curtailing overheads was the primary reason for 62% of participants, whilst 26% found environmental considerations to be the biggest motivator.

David Renton, UPSL Managing Director, explained: I think this survey has revealed some very interesting, if not wholly surprising, statistics. It demonstrates that despite the increasing need to be environmentally responsible, these considerations are still playing second fiddle to keeping a tight control on operating costs. With the price of energy rising every year, combined with increasing material costs and constant technological developments, many businesses are having a hard time keeping IT departments within budget and savings are having to be made in every area.
