The Essential Laptop Travel Kit

We rely on our laptops for work and entertainment and often insist on bringing them everywhere we roam

. If you're planning on taking your laptop with you on your next trip, make sure you're prepared. Consider creating a "Laptop Travel Kit" by purchasing and packing a few essential computer accessories.

1. Electrical Converters and Adapters

While voltage within a country is typically standardized, if you're traveling to multiple countries, you should be aware of international variations in voltage and be prepared to deal with the different sizes and shapes of electrical plugs. Check your computer's user manual to confirm what current(s) your laptop is capable of utilizing. If your laptop is not designed to function on multiple currents, you will need an electrical converter to prevent damage.

While a converter may not be necessary, you will most likely require an adapter for your plug to fit into foreign outlets. You may purchase a single adapter unique to an individual country or sets that include a variety of adapters capable of being used all over the world.

2. Internet Access Aids

Wireless network adapters: Most relatively new laptops have built-in wireless network adapters that allow your computer to access wireless internet (Wi-Fi) without the use of any additional equipment. However, for laptops without this feature, the same effect can be achieved by purchasing a wireless notebook card at any computer supply store.

Ethernet cables: Some locations require visitors to physically "plug in" in order to access their Internet connection. While many places will have the suitable cables available, bringing your own Ethernet cable will allow you to still finish your work even if there isn't one supplied.

3. Mobile Broadband Card

For areas that don't have reliable Wi-Fi hotspots, you may want to consider connecting to the Internet through a cell phone provider's network. You can purchase a mobile broadband card from most major cell phone providers and pay a small monthly charge for Internet access available from anywhere the cell phone provider has service.

4. Surge Protection

A surge protection strip can help keep your computer from being a causality of power surges. However, you should be aware of what voltage output you will be working with and purchase an appropriate surge protector.

5. Carrying Case

Considering the value of your laptop, it makes sense to protect it as you travel. Investing in a well-padded carrying case or laptop bag will help assure that your laptop makes it to your final destination in working condition.

6. Back Up Storage

While you can store all of your files directly on your laptop, it is a good idea of bring along flash drives, CDs, or an external hard drive to back up your work. After all, you never know when your computer may crash unexpectedly.
