The Ever Popular Nurse Midwife

Up until about the 20th century, a midwife was the only person you would even consider having help with your childbirth

. Midwives were seen as healers and helped with a great deal more than just delivering babies. But as medicine became more modern, surgeons began to state that their scientific techniques were superior and much healthier and safer for mothers giving birth. Doctors wanted all the obstetrical care for themselves and soon people were forbidden to practice midwifery in some states. These days, restrictions are slowly being lifted from midwives around the country, and more and more people are looking into midwifery as a career choice.

There are several different types of midwife. The most recognized is the nurse midwife. A nurse midwife is someone who has studied nursing as well as midwifery. Often these professionals have also completed their masters degree in nursing, midwifery, or public health. Depending on the state they are licensed as advanced practiced nurses or nurse midwives. Generally, nurse midwives work in hospitals, clinics, and private offices. At this time, about two percent of all nurse midwives are men.

There are also direct-entry midwives. These midwives did no not have a nursing education and have studied midwifery through apprenticeship , a private midwifery school, or a college/university specialty program. A certified professional midwife, or a CPM, has been certified by the North American Registry of Midwives. This certification proves that the CPM has midwifery experience in settings outside of a hospital. There are only a bit more than 2000 CPMs practicing in the states today.

A lay midwife is someone who has been trained informally through self study or apprenticeship and has chosen not to acquire a certification. This could be by choice or because there is no certification for the kind of midwifery they are practicing. It is still a relatively uncharted field as far as colleges and universities go.

In some states, midwifery is still struggling to prove its legitimacy. For example, in Iowa, many midwifes are fighting to make it legal for women to delver babies in their homes. They believe that birth should not necessarily have to be a medical event, and doctors and hospitals should only be used if complications arise.

But midwifery isnt just making a comeback in the states. Abu Dhabi now boasts its first three Emirati midwives to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Midwifery. There is a high demand for midwives in the UAE and the Higher Colleges of Technology created the program to address that need. Midwives in England are traveling regularly to Sierra Leone with a group called African Maternity Link. These midwives are offering knowledge, training, and supplies to the locals in an effort to ease womens childbirth. A woman cashed in her pension, sold her car and all of her jewelry and belongings, and built a hospital in Somaliland dedicated to training midwives to send around the country. Midwifery is no alternative health fad. Its power is just finally being recognized again.
