The Evolution Of Advertising

Advertisement, broadly known, is a form of communication which

, on the one hand, promotes the sale of a product or service and, on the other hand, conveys the massage that an institution, organization or candidate for political office want to send out. To better understand how ads reached the position, recognition and power that they have nowadays, let's look back, four centuries ago, when this concept first emerged.

In the early 1860's people got the opportunity of receiving publications by post and this was a major flow channel of communication for advertisements.

The first magazine advertisements appeared in The Southern Messenger, during the 19th century. Many of the magazines of that time began to publish advertisements as the separate charter and have continued doing it nowadays. The most widely advertised consumer products at this time had been patent medicines. All the other household products, such as milk, sugar, soap, rice and candles had been sold in neighborhood shops from bulk packages.

As acknowledged nowadays, ads can be described as follows: they are trying to sell a product and it does that by sending subliminal messages to influence the buyers' course of actions in its favor. To understand how powerful an advertisement can be on the market, we can look at the success stories throughout history. Let's take for example an ad to a famous brand of cigarettes dated from 1955. At the beginning, this product was meant for women. The brand started as marketing its mildness and aimed a rather small market niche, that is, women smokers. Things have radically changed when an advertising agency introduced the man, a rugged cowboy on horseback smoking a cigarette designed for men that women like. The sales immediately shot up and the once anonymous cigarettes became the world's best-selling cigarette brand. It was back then when widely-recognized advertising icons first emerged and people's surroundings changed for good.


The introduction of the television set was an important discovery that helped advertising development. Commercial TV stations took the air and they played an important role in manipulating the consumers. Later on, TV shows allowed access to a variety of advertisers for a short period of time and this is how the commercial break as we know it was born.

Nowadays, advertising is a huge business and this is mainly due to the fact that media, like newspapers, television, direct mail, radio, magazines, outdoor signs and the Internet made this growth possible.
