The Evolution Of Ballpens To Uniball Pens

The invention of uniball pens was a welcome relief after millennia of having to deal

with either stones, sticks, hammers or whatever, even feathers used just to write something on something that can be written on. From cave walls, to slabs of rocks to papyri and eventually the paper, it was not until several millennia that a comfortable and very functional writing implement was finally born.

People actually got to believe that there was nothing else to take the place of a feathered quill until 1938 came around. A Hungarian journalist developed the ball pen when he devised a mechanism involving a small ball, a tube and a thick type of ink that was normally used to print newspapers. As the thick ink dried fairly quickly compared to the thinner types that quills needed, he thought that it would work well with his ideas.

Laszlo Biro realized that his invention was historical, especially when the British Royal Airforce approached him and asked him to make some of his pens be available for pilots who needed something to write with that did not spill and dry quickly. This is where the saying comes in when some claim that World War II was won by the pen. So truly, the experiment was a total success and the world became aware of the implement.

Sad story is that Biro lost out on a patent issue with the US government and was denied the fortune that should have gone his way.Eventually, the uniroller first came out as a metal point roller pen engineered in such a way that modern technology has not even bothered to change it, only improve on it. The uniroller was marketed as uniball pens and the sales skyrocketed.

There are some improvements like a rubber tube that is slid where the grip is located to ease the knuckles or the modern uniball pens that now carry acid free and environmentally friendly inks.
