The Evolution Of Men's Fashion

It's evident that when it comes to evolution in fashion

, examples can be found of the drastic change in what people wear when one looks at what women have worn over time. On the other hand, when it comes to men's fashion, it is easy to simply assume that there haven't been that many drastic changes. That is however, a wrong assumption to make because though the trends might not have taken leaps and bounds the way women's fashions have, the way men dress has significantly changed over the decades.

We can start talking about the evolution in men's fashion since the 1920's. Everyday wear for men used to have a formal flair to it with tweed blazers and collared shirts. At that time, something that we consider 'casual wear' in today's world i.e. t-shirts were actually worn as under wear. Men had quite extravagant evening wear in the 20's just like the fairer sex. It consisted of top hats and long tail coats with gloves and sticks to accompany the attire.

But as with every extravagance, the 1930's economic breakdown lead to cutting back on the luxurious trends and became more casual with the plaid pattern becoming more popular. Materials such as plaid, because of the economic prices, became more in fashion instead of the lush materials and fabrics seen in past fashion trends.

With the coming of the world wars, the 1940's saw more inclusion of the uniformed look of matching trousers and jackets into the world of men's fashion. In addition, a bright hue of colorful button down casual shirts was seen on the streets, while creative men expressed their uniqueness through ties of vibrant colors and prints.

The 1950's saw the entrance of narrow casual trousers with short sleeved shirts that men felt free to wear without ties as well. However, this decade is more known for the development of 'street wear' which included the denim jeans which are still the most popular items to date.

The most vibrant styles came in the 60's with tighter fits, more feminine shades, floral prints, etc. Velvet became popular again while shoes took on a pointier and more colorful streak, previously unseen in men's clothing. The most iconic style from this era will have to be the bell bottom trouser that was worn casually and formally in every kind of fabric possible, sometimes even embellished with sequins and stones.

The 'power suite' made its appearance in the 80's with men's couture fashion evolving. 80's was the era of 'rock' as well which meant the younger male could be seen wearing leather and studs mostly on all-black attires.

The 90's were also quite influenced by the 'popular' music genre with the grunge look taking by storm in the early 90's. This look consisted of favorite band t-shirts with jeans, boots and messy hair. Later down the decade, we saw revivals of looks from previous eras of fashion in order to welcome the new millennium.

Meanwhile fashion for younger men in the first decade of the new century has seen to be easily influenced by popular and hip hop culture. The 80's power suite continues to dominate the corporate environment as well as for older men. However, today the difference is that fashion can be seen in various flavors and men are more open to expressing who they are through their choice of clothes.
