The Face of Naval Warfare Will Change
Future Naval warfare will probably not be anything at like the way that we know it to be. I dont think that we will see the force on force battles of previous wars. The days of large fleets of heavily armed battleships duking it out on the high seas are over. No more air craft carriers firing cannons at swarms of torpedo planes and dive bombers which hover around them like angry bumblebees. Modern tactics, technology, and the expanded concept of naval warfare have changed the face of naval combat forever.
When we look at the capabilities and ranges of the new technology that we now have the WWII battleship has become antiquated. Naval warfare will now extend past the borders of the ocean. The area of concern for a naval vessel now will be much more than just the small area of water which surrounds it.
Smart missiles and bombs make it no longer necessary for ships to get close enough to duke it out with their big guns. Ships can destroy each other from very long distances with our new missile and radar technology. There is no more need to have to see your target in order to hit it. If you look at modern naval combat vessels you will notice that they have very few of the traditional guns that we are used to seeing. If a sailor were to come back from old he would be utterly shocked at what he would see. He would also be totally lost because of the new technology.
In lieu of this the face of the Navy will change drastically in the near future. There is not as much of a requirement for massive carriers, submarines, and other warships. This will probably mean a drawing down of our Navy personnel forces and the loss of many of our US Navy ring customers from the active duty rolls of the Navy. Modern ships and submarines do not need as many sailors to operate them because of the new technology. They can also reach out and touch aircraft, ships, and other targets which are much farther away than the naked eye will see. Therefore battles will not be as close and personal as they were in WWII. Modern weapons are much more devastating then those of the 40s and 50s so swarms of ships and aircraft will not be necessary to take out another ship or plane.
We must remember however that the Chinese Navy is being rapidly built up and any future war with China would certainly be more of a naval war and not a land war, but it would be a type of naval war that the world has never seen. It would be multidimensional with naval warfare as one of its major parts but the Chinese would attempt to manipulate our currency, and our economy. In addition there would be cyber warfare and space warfare. Our Navy has changed its war mindset to deal with this type of war. It would take place on the ocean, under the ocean, in the atmosphere, and in outer space. Now you say what has outer space to do with the Navy. Well thats where satellites that they use happen to be. Also many missiles will have to travel through space during their journey.
On top of this we have the ever constant piracy problem which is growing and needs to be dealt with, and a terrorist threat that will never go away. Remember also the drug interdiction that we have to conduct from time to time. The LCS is comparable to the old navy cruiser. It is fast, light, relatively small, and has stealth characteristics. I may be wrong but I believe that the new LCS will be key in helping us in these areas. Our Navy ring customers will probably have to gear up to be a smaller, lighter, faster force.
