The Facts Behind Botox

Botulinum toxin - known to millions as Botox - is now one of the most common ways to treat wrinkles in the UK and worldwide

. However, before considering Botox, it's important to take into account some basic facts behind both the product and the procedures for administering it.

Botox is a naturally occurring "poison" derived from the bacteria Clostridium botulinum also a known food toxin. However, while Botox is very toxic in high doses, it can be used in small doses to effectively treat muscle spasms, wrinkles, migraine headaches and various other conditions. In treating wrinkles, Botox is injected into certain areas of the face to cause a temporary paralysis of nerves and muscles. As a result, certain facial expressions responsible for deep wrinkles can't be made, and wrinkles begin to smooth out.

For instance, many people have deep wrinkles from constant frowning or eyebrow lifting - facial expressions that are often made out of habit. However, Botox can be injected into the forehead and over the bridge of the nose to reduce these expressions and smooth out the lines caused by them. Contrary to what many people might believe or even fear, Botox will not completely disable a person from showing facial expressions. Injections are highly targeted to ensure only very specific areas are affected which means it's possible to treat the appearance of lines and wrinkles and still show expressions in your face.

Once injected, Botox can start to work immediately. However, some patients begin to see the full effects of Botox a few days after injection. Treatment usually begins to wear off after about three to four months, though many patients have reported the affects of injections lasting longer - around six months - over time. While lines and wrinkles will return if Botox treatments are not kept up with, skin will have regenerated to some degree from prior treatments meaning that for many people, line appearance is improved even once the Botox has won off, and before seeking any additional treatment.

With regard to the administering of Botox, only a qualified practitioner or cosmetic surgeon should give you these injections. It's always important to seek out qualifications and credentials, as many establishments offer Botox injection services with little prior experience. By knowing the facts behind Botox - as well as the appropriate procedures for administering it - you'll be more likely to get the service and results that you want.
