The Famed Margarita Island

This island is the largest landmass in the state of Nueva Esparta in Venezuela

. This island paradise is located on the northeastern coast of the country in the Caribbean Sea. The capital city of Nueva Esparta is La Asuncion and is the tourism and commercial center of the area.

The famed history of the island started upon its discovery by Christopher Columbus in 1498. The locals then, called Guaigueries, received the foreigners with open arms and soon found to be enslaved by the conquistadors. From then on, the island became the primary source of pearls for the Spanish Crown and over history, has its share of sieges and raids from the sea from invading armadas.

In 1814, the local populace of the island was able to overthrow the Spanish authorities and gained independence. This made the island the first area in Venezuela to gain freedom from the invaders. In 1816, Simon Bolivar was confirmed as the first Commander in Chief of the Venezuelan Republic and from there undertook the campaign to free Venezuela and neighboring countries to independence from Spanish rule.

Now, after those bleak and fateful struggles, Venezuela has retained its independence. Margarita Island has now become the prime tourist destination for the country. It now boasts of not only breathtaking vistas and gorgeous views, it also has many excellent hotels and services for those seeking fun while on the island. Because it has been declared as a duty-free port, this island also has become a haven for local and foreign visitors seeking time out from their hectic daily lives.

The island also is home to at least fifty beaches scattered along over a hundred miles of coastline. There are many beaches on the island, depending on the number of factors such as popularity and accessibility. Amongst the most popular ones is Playa El Agua up north and boasts of four kilometers of fine sand, Playa El Yague that is perfect for windsurfing and Playa Punta Arenas, which is best for sunbathing. For the prime tourist beach location, it would be best to go to Playa Puerto Cruz. There are also many virgin locations that can serve as hideaways for couples wanting to get far from the beaten path.

Margarita Island is truly an island paradise in Venezuela. It has a rich history and even richer environment for fun and frolic in the sand. Depending on your taste and budget, finding the perfect spot under the sun in the island is a decision you can make once you travel to his exotic locale in South America.
