Croatia has eight national parks: Brijuni islands, Kornati islands, the Krka river, the island of Mljet, Paklenica gorge, Plitvice Lakes, Risnjak mountain and North Velebit mountain.

The most popular National Park in Croatia is Plitvice Lakes which is unique and fascinating natural phenomenon. It is situated on the foot of Lika and Kordun, between the mountains of Mala Kapela and Licka Pljesevica, along the road that connects Zagreb with Dalmatia.

The national park represents a phenomenon of karst hydrography. A large number of caves and pits are located in the area of the national park.

There are sixteen lakes in crystal blue and green colors which are connected by cascades and sparkling waterfalls. The highest waterfall in Croatia is located in this national park. It is 78 meters high waterfall Veliki Slap.

The lakes are divided into upper and lower lakes. The upper lakes are surrounded by dense forest and connected by numerous waterfalls. The lower lakes are smaller and shallow with less vegetation.

The national park is abundant with flora and fauna. The lakes are rich with fish and shellfish but fishing is only possible in some places with special permission. More than quarter of the National park is covered by forest of beech, fir, spruce and pine. A large number of rare and protected plant species, such as saxifrage, yew and peony grow in the national park. Bear, wolf, otter, wild pigs, ferrets, squirrels, rabbits and foxes inhabit the national park. The brown bear is the most attractive specie in the National park. 126 bird species are registered in the area of the national park of which about 70 constantly nest there.

The Plitvice Lakes national park has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979. The national park is among the most beautiful sights of Europe. It is the oldest and biggest national park in the country.

The climate is a mixture of coastal and continental. Summers are warm and sunny. Winters are relatively long, cold and snowy.

The best time to visit the national park is in the summer, although winter provides an unforgettable picture of frozen waterfalls. Each season is rich with colors, sounds and scents.

The most attractive part of the national park covers the area of 8 km where the tourist trails are situated. Wooden bridges and trails provide contact with waterfalls and lakes. So, don't just read about all those beautiful sites, visit Croatia and its national parks.
