Niger Delta is found in Nigeria. It's the hub of the country's oil and it's very densely populated. The area was once called the Oil Rivers and it's was the country's major producer of palm oil. It was taken over by the British and became the Oil Rivers Protectorate from 1885 to1893. Now the area has been renamed the Niger Oil Delta and it's controlled by the government. The area covers around 70,00km2 and takes up around 8% of the country's land.
Niger Delta encompasses many regions. They include the River States, Delta and Bayesla. The region has other states that have since separated from the main Delta like Cross River State, Abia and others. There are around 31 million people with over 40 ethnic groups like the famous Yoruba's, Igbo and Ibibio are among the inhabitants of the Delta. The communities speak over 250 different dialects. The Delta is oil rich but has been marred by a lot of controversy from the International Oil Companies that have invaded the area to tap on the flowing oil.
Niger Delta is the highest petroleum producer in the country. The area has made Nigeria to be ranked among Africa biggest producer of oil. Around 2million barrels of oil is extracted everyday. The region accounts for around 75% of Nigeria's export earnings. The area has provided a lot of employment to the locals and boosted their lives greatly. It's no wonder that Nigeria has been able to invest so much in education and most of the citizens are graduates.
